SWEET SCIENCE reviewed

In its February 25th edition, the Illinois Entertainer magazine singles out Vernam Cipher's SWEET SCIENCE CD for praise as "a pleasing mix of honkytonk storytelling," among other kind assertions. See the extended entry below for the complete review, or pick up a print copy at your favorite record store. This may represent the first time ever -- no matter the context -- that Vernam has been called "pleasing." Hey, we'll take it.

Copies of the disk will be on sale, of course, at our next two shows on Fridays February 11 and 18. The first will be at our usual haunt, Ballydoyle in Downers Grove (5157 Main St.), from 9pm to midnight. On February 18, we'll play Molly Malone's in Forest Park (7652 Madison St.), from 10pm to 2am. Come to either, come to both, but don't just sit there.

The SWEET SCIENCE cd by singer-songwriter Vernam Cipher is a pleasing mix of honky-tonk storytelling and Southern folk instrumentation. Songs such as "Robert Ryan" and "Pigeon Toed Girl" paint a musical picture of characters real or conceived ("She looks just as fine in front as she does from behind/You can go ahead and stare, she doesn't really mind"). Fiddle, mandolin, and shuffling drumbeats complete the throwback aesthetic. -- reviewed by Jason Scales
