Unfortunately, it's not for another five years.

For months, I've been meaning to post something about how Conan's show has jumped the shark. It's gotten decreasingly funny ever since Andy Richter left, in fact. What had been Conan's flair for self-deprecation now just seems like mugging; he's become not much more than Craig Kilborn, minus the good looks. On the plus side, I get to bed much earlier or get more stuff done when I do stay up.

In retrospect, I'd say he's been consciously dumbing down the show to make it more palatable to NBC execs. Conan is too ambitious to make the same mistake Letterman did in asserting too much independence, which cost him the chance to replace Carson. As Travis Bickle and Joe Strummer said, "Now I see clearly . . ."

(Loved the Modest Mouse tales, btw.)

But will Max Weinberg begin wearing Doc Sevrenson leisure suits?
