Mr. Kirby Urner <pdx4d@igc.apc.org>
Dear Mr. Rheingold:
(1) Many, many thanks for your msgs (ATTACHMENT I).
It is my great pleasure and honor to be introduced to the world renowned
writer, such as you, by Bill.
> BTW, I was once introduced to you by Kirby also -- more than 10 years ago=
=8B
> see ATTACHMENT II.
>> Dear Bill and Kirby:

I am awfully sorry I could not reply to you much earlier because of my trip=

(2) I once read the book review of your =B3Smart Mobs=B2 in The New York Times
many months ago with great interest.
I then visited your <http://www.smartmobs.com/book/index.html>, and read
through it. It is really a fascinating book, indeed. My wholehearted
congratulations to you!!
> Dear E-Colleagues:
> I highly commend you to visit the web and read it through. It is very
> succinct, yet covers wide area of new media and subsequent social movemen=
ts.
(3) Digitalization started by ENIAC has now being enhanced by digital
telecommunication to accelerate globalization with e-government, e-commerce=
,
e-learning, e-healthcare, etc., to name but a few.
=20
Internet is the future of telecommunication, which is now profoundly
contributing communication among people of the world to form a global
village, particularly through the World Wide Web (WWW).
Dr. Paul Baran, one of our list members for many years, invented
packet-switching technology in early 1960s. Packet switching is the
fundamental technology upon which the entire Internet, including WWW, is
built.
The essential principle of the packet-switching technology is =B3sharing,=B2
i.e., the sharing of valuable telecommunication media which brought drastic
cost reduction of the telecommunication in recent years.
=20
This principle is now being extended to the sharing of information,
knowledge through the WWW, and even the sharing of wisdom through emerging
e-learning and e-healthcare. This will create an egalitarian global societ=
y
by global citizens for global peace.
The Internet allows anyone in the world instant access to all of the world=B9=
s
information creating a global village. The student anywhere in the world
now has access to the world=B9s intellectual resources, formerly available
only to the rich in a few developed countries.
We are in such a pleasure and joy to engage in the Great Global Social
Transformation and Revolution!!
(4) With these observations, I wholeheartedly agree with the contentions of
your book.
I am particularly happy to learn of your mentioning the =B3collective
computation=B2 for human cooperation to build understanding and trust =8B you
may visit my very recent following list distribution;
> (03/04/04) World Dynamics models
> http://www.friends-partners.org/pipermail/gu-l/2004q1/000261.html
As you see there, we are now forging ahead to establish Globally
Collaborative Environmental Peace Gaming with affordable and accessible
methodologies, basing on the concept of GRID technology which you mentioned
and which concept I initiated in early 1970s =8B as you find in Item (8) of
this distribution.
(5) My hope is that, with the use of such technologies, young people around
the world can collaboratively create =B3global culture=B2 as crumbling down the
walls and barriers among different cultures, for the knowledge society of
the 21st century.
For this, as you say, we need to have =B3trust=B2 among the people =8B and I hope
that this trust building would be the basis of the global peace.

Note from Kirby Urner (pdx4d). You may have heard of
Howard Rheingold, a "high tech guru" journalist, author of
"The Virtual Community" (a Magical Mystery Tour of the
human side of cyberspace). He is also the editor of the
Whole Earth Review. Anyway I just had a front row seat
his well-attended (2000 plus audience) lecture in a large
Portland auditorium. His focus and intent vis-a-vis
deregulation and making many-to-many media accessible
reminded me very much of your work and I feel I should do
some work to cross-pollinate. I came to your work,
recalling back a few years, via the late Robert Smith III.
=20
Here an excerpt of my recent letter to Rheingold (mentioning
you) and part of his his reply..

...Takeshi Utsumi does the affordable/accessible Global
Lecture Hall demos w/ slow scan TV by satellite uplinks &
internet participation, like global versions of your Q&A
session tonight, the blue question cards coming from outer
Mongolia etc. -- I thought you were tops by the way, a
real Mark Twain of VR/VC. Utsumi, now operating from NY
state, was instrumental in getting Japan telecomms to
dereg (so says his online resume), so now we *don't* have
to pay big fees to open a BBS in Japan (I'm supposing).

<BR>
Note from Kirby Urner (pdx4d). You may have heard of <BR>
Howard Rheingold, a "high tech guru" journalist, author of =
<BR>
"The Virtual Community" (a Magical Mystery Tour of the <BR>
human side of cyberspace). He is also the editor of the <BR>
Whole Earth Review. Anyway I just had a front row seat <BR>
his well-attended (2000 plus audience) lecture in a large <BR>
Portland auditorium. His focus and intent vis-a-vis <BR>
deregulation and making many-to-many media accessible <BR>
reminded me very much of your work and I feel I should do <BR>
some work to cross-pollinate. I came to your work, <BR>
recalling back a few years, via the late Robert Smith III. <BR>
<BR>
Here an excerpt of my recent letter to Rheingold (mentioning <BR>
you) and part of his his reply.. <BR>

...Takeshi Utsumi does the affordable/accessible Global <BR>
Lecture Hall demos w/ slow scan TV by satellite uplinks & <BR>
internet participation, like global versions of your Q&A <BR>
session tonight, the blue question cards coming from outer <BR>
Mongolia etc. -- I thought you were tops by the way, a <BR>
real Mark Twain of VR/VC. Utsumi, now operating from NY <BR>
state, was instrumental in getting Japan telecomms to <BR>
dereg (so says his online resume), so now we *don't* have <BR>
to pay big fees to open a BBS in Japan (I'm supposing). <BR>

...I'd love to hear from your Japanese friend. I have many close <BR>
friends in the Japanese online world -- as you might surmise <BR>
from my book. <BR>
<BR>
Keep up the great work! <BR>

I enjoyed the recent GLOSAS NEWS re Simulations. Sent <BR>
Anton some feedback. Looking forward to seeing my contribution <BR>
in an upcoming issue. <BR>

PS: All I could dig up this PM was an old BITNET address <BR>
from some of your very first mailings to me. As I recall, <BR>
we switched to another address later -- the old one may not <BR>
work. I'm sending a copy to Anton [Howdy Anton]. Hoping to &nbs=

get through by one channel or another. <BR>
