Dear Jerry:
(1) Many, many thanks for your msgs (ATTACHMENT I and II), as indicating
your strong willingness to work with our GUS/Malawi project =8B after your
reading the concept paper submitted by Prof. Kamwanja of the University of
Malawi to the Japan Social Development Fund of the World Bank at;
> Concept Paper: "The Establishment of Maravi-Net (MARNET) and Local Commun=
ity
> Development Networks (LCDNs) for E-learning and E-healthcare in Malawi"
> Application for Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF)/Seed Fund

> 0System/Africa/Malawi/Concept%20Paper_web/Concept_Paper_Malawi.html
(2) Yes, Prof. Kamwanja would be very happy to have your group=B9s cooperatio=
n
to our GUS/Malawi project, particularly with your expertise on Internet and
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).
> BTW, you may visit;

> And other related materials
> http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2003/wireless/
It would be very beneficial if VoIP can be available over WiFi (Wireless
Fidelity) broadband Internet to those people in remote/rural areas of Malaw=
i
with our GUS/Malawi project =8B as has been done in a village of American
indigenous people in Arizona.

As you see in it, we hope that our GUS would perform the following three
major functions;
> 1. E-Learning and E-Healthcare,
> 2. Community Development, and
> 3. Gateway for the Global Partnership
(4) We may also follow the model of LINCOS with a truck van as you see in
Slide #35 and 36, -- which may be in line with your idea of having =B3kiosk=B2
or =B3Internet Caf=E9=B2 in remote/rural villages.
(5) As soon as I hear from Prof. Kamwanja a favorable response to the
concept paper he submitted to the JSDF, I will make a fact-finding and
assessment trip to Malawi. We then plan to construct a full proposal (up t=
o
about US$2 million) which first event is to organize a large workshop for
realization of GUS/Malawi. You and your Malawi colleagues may attend it ho=
w
to configure the realization.
I will certainly keep you informed with these progresses through this list.
Dear Degli Antoni:
(6) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT III), in response to my previous
list of;
> [gu-l] (11/27/03) Sincere thanks for your generous donation

Pls convey my best regards to simone sala. We will certainly invite his
attendance to the workshop in Malawi.
> BTW, Senagal is eligible to the JSDF so that if Simone can find an approp=

gal,

Dear Prof. Kamwanja:
(7) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT IV).
As you see in the above, you are getting powerful allies.
(8) Pls inform me your contact with the JSDF at the World Bank in Lilongue
in details so that I would like to report it to the appropriate person of
the Japanese government in Tokyo when I will visit next time.
(9) Shall I visit and ask Dr. Lamba (who firstly introduced me to you) to
send his endorsement letter to the World Bank officer whom you are
contacting? If agreeable, pls inform me the coordinates (name and address,
email, etc.) of the person at the World Bank.

Subject: Malawi Broadband and VoIP
Mr. Eger,
=20
I came across a "concept paper" while doing some research on Broadband
Internet access in Malawi that was generated as a solicitation for the Japa=
n
Social Development Fund. It had you as one of the involved resumes.
=20
Mr. Utsumi,
=20
My name is Jerry Lambert and I am the Malawi subcommittee chairman for the
World Mission Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth. I have bee=
n
to Malawi and, as a matter of fact, had the Bishop of the diocese of
Northern Malawi and three of their priests in my home for Thanksgiving last
week. I am very interested in the welfare of these wonderful people.
Professionally, I am a telecommunications consultant with a deep background
in Internet and VoIP systems and network deployment.
=20
I am interested in looking at how the Diocese of Northern Malawi might be
able to play a part in this LCDNS structure described in this document. I
believe that there is a great deal of money that can be saved by the Dioces=
e
and also possibly some ongoing revenue potential for them if "call centers"
or "internet cafes" can be established along the route of the Diocesan
outposts.
=20
Do you have any guidance for me on how I might get involved in this work.
=20
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
=20
Sincerely,
=20
