(4) I took the liberty of quoting your words in the above GCEPG paper;

Pls note Figure 8 (of my paper mentioned in the Item (3) above): =20
Globally Collaborative Environmental Peace Gaming Networks which is the =20=
dual system of the Globally Distributed Climate Simulation System and =20=
the Globally Distributed Socio-Economic-Environmental Simulation System =20=
with the globally distributed decision support system =97 both of which =20=
are to utilize the so-called GRID computer networking technology in =20
global scale.
At the aforementioned workshop in Berlin on December 3rd, I plan to =20
propose that the GCEPG project could be a complete and powerful =20
demonstrator of ELeGI Project to show (1) the advantages coming from =20
using advanced technologies (i.e., GRID for accessing to computing =20
resources and collaboration environments) for supporting simulations =20
execution, data analysis, etc., and (2) simulations for learning =20
through the definition of innovative pedagogical models (i.e., =20
socio-constructivist contextualized learning approach), and (3) to show =20=
all the benefits coming from the harmonized and synergistic use of =20
advanced technologies together with innovative pedagogical models for =20=
learning (i.e., ELeGI).
I also plan to solicit interested people on this project from North =20
America and Japan.
Should you be interested in this direction, I would be very delighted =20=
to visit you and describe it further.
Dear John and Ralph, Dr. Karatza:
(5) You know that I have been working on this project since I created =20=
your Summer Computer Simulation Conference (SCSC) in 1970 in Denver (as =20=
Program Chairman) and in 1971 in Boston (as General Chairman). I then =20=
presented my first paper on this project at the International Computer =20=
Communication Conference at Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. in =20
October, 1972 with a travel fund from the US National Science =20
Foundation =97 I was at Mitsubishi Research Institute in Tokyo at that =20=
time.

Your Figure 1 caught my eyes, since it is very similar to the =20
cause-and-effect diagram of the System Dynamic methodology which was =20
initiated by my Professor Jay W. Forrester of M.I.T.. Since the human =20=
activities is an integral component of the complex non-linear physical, =20=
chemical, and biological interactions of the Earth System, I think that =20=
the similar diagram of socio-economic-environmental model is needed to =20=
be associated with your system in the Figure 1.
You then said;

Our Globally Collaborative Environmental Peace Gaming (GCEPG) with a =20
globally distributed computer simulation system, focusing on the issue =20=
of environment and sustainable development in developing countries, is =20=
to train would-be decision makers in crisis management, conflict =20
resolution, and negotiation techniques basing on "facts and figures."

Since 1986 I often conducted large scale =93Global Lecture Hall (GHL)=94 =

multipoint-to-multipoint, multimedia interactive videoconferencings =20
spanning globe some of which were often centered at the TV studio of =20
your Colorado State University in Fort Collins, by the kind arrangement =20=
of the President Lionel Baldwin of National Technological University. =20=
Should you be interested in our GCEPG, pls let us keep in touch.
I think that it is now a vital necessity to figure out how to =20
interconnect simulation models of various sectors and countries =97 =20
Figure 8 (of my paper mentioned in the Item (3) above) could be the one =20=
way to do that.
Dear E-Colleagues:
(9) In my paper of GCEPG in the Item (3) above, I mentioned of Japan=92s =
=20
monstrously big (4 tennis court size) and expensive (US$350 million) =20
Earth Simulator supercomputer at 35 teraflops, the currently world =20
fastest supercomputer with =93rich-man=92s approach,=94 but based on =20
conventional, obsolete digital computer technology. I also said that, =20=
as soon as Japanese often catch up with American=92s technology, =
American =20
often invent new technology which will surpass the old one.
I also said in my paper that =93In contrast to the single supercomputer =20=
as the Earth Simulator, the current and future trend of high =20
performance computing is to build a cluster of personal computers with =20=
inexpensive off-the-shelf (or even second-hand, used) PCs =97 the =20
so-called =93poor-man=92s approach.=94 The parallel processing of this =20=
cluster system divides a complex problem into smaller component tasks, =20=
as similar to distributed computer simulation system mentioned above. =20=
This scheme of PC cluster is now called the Beowulf mini supercomputer. =20=
=93
Pls visit =93Mac Supercomputer: Fast, Cheap=94 by Leander Kahney in =
Wired =20

This tells that Virginia Tech built Beowulf mini supercomputer, the =20
second most powerful supercomputer on the planet, as interconnecting =20
1,100 dual-processor Power Mac G5s (hence 2,200 parallel processors), =20=
which achieved 1.7 teraflops.
The machine is the first supercomputer based on Macs; it is one of the =20=
few supercomputers built entirely from off-the-shelf components and it =20=
cost a bargain-bucket price =97 only $5.2 million. By comparison, most =20=
of the top 10 supercomputers cost about $40 million and up, -- not =20
mentioning $350 million of the Earth Simulator.
The Beowulf concept (PC-Cluster) is an empowering force. It wrests =20
high-level computing away from the privileged few and makes low-cost =20
parallel-processing systems available to those with modest resources. =20=
Research groups, high schools, colleges or small business can build or =20=
buy their own Beowulf clusters, realizing the promise of a =20
supercomputer in every basement.
I would like to let every GUS member institutions around the world have =20=
Beowulf mini supercomputer, say, starting with about a dozen Power Mac =20=
G5s (or equivalent PCs) at about total cost of $50,000, which is about =20=
100th smaller than the one at Virginia Tech. They are to be =20
interconnected through Global Broadband Internet (GBI) with the GRID =20
technology.
(10) BTW, though not as dramatic as Virginia Tech, the University of =20
Tokyo (one of the largest universities in Japan) currently installed =20
1,000 iMac for students=92 use on campus =97 reasons: ease of =
maintenance =20
and repair. I think this is a very rare right decision they have ever =20=
made.
At Columbia University in New York, my colleague (who worked over 30 =20
years at IBM) recently switched from Miscrosoft=92s platform to iBook of =
=20
Apple =97 reason: for multimedia Internet access, DVD production, etc. =
-- =20
this was the same reason when I switched from Window 3.1 to Mac almost =20=
a dozen years ago.

Globally Collaborative Environmental Peace Gaming Networks which is
the dual system of the Globally Distributed Climate Simulation System
and the Globally Distributed Socio-Economic-Environmental Simulation
System with the globally distributed decision support system =97 both of
which are to utilize the so-called GRID computer networking technology
in global scale.
At the aforementioned workshop in Berlin on December 3rd, I plan to
propose that the GCEPG project could be a complete and powerful
demonstrator of ELeGI Project to show (1) the advantages coming from
using advanced technologies (i.e., GRID for accessing to computing
resources and collaboration environments) for supporting simulations
execution, data analysis, etc., and (2) simulations for learning
through the definition of innovative pedagogical models (i.e.,
socio-constructivist contextualized learning approach), and (3) to
show all the benefits coming from the harmonized and synergistic use
of advanced technologies together with innovative pedagogical models
for learning (i.e., ELeGI).
I also plan to solicit interested people on this project from North
America and Japan.

Since 1986 I often conducted large scale =93Global Lecture Hall (GHL)=94
multipoint-to-multipoint, multimedia interactive videoconferencings
spanning globe some of which were often centered at the TV studio of
your Colorado State University in Fort Collins, by the kind

I think that it is now a vital necessity to figure out how to
interconnect simulation models of various sectors and countries =97

one way to do that.

monstrously big (4 tennis court size) and expensive (US$350 million)
Earth Simulator supercomputer at 35 teraflops, the currently world
fastest supercomputer with =93rich-man=92s approach,=94 but based on
conventional, obsolete digital computer technology. I also said that,
as soon as Japanese often catch up with American=92s technology,
American often invent new technology which will surpass the old one.
I also said in my paper that =93In contrast to the single supercomputer
as the Earth Simulator, the current and future trend of high
performance computing is to build a cluster of personal computers with
inexpensive off-the-shelf (or even second-hand, used) PCs =97 the
so-called =93poor-man=92s approach.=94 The parallel processing of this
cluster system divides a complex problem into smaller component tasks,
as similar to distributed computer simulation system mentioned above.=20
This scheme of PC cluster is now called the Beowulf mini
supercomputer. =93

This tells that Virginia Tech built Beowulf mini supercomputer, the
second most powerful supercomputer on the planet, as interconnecting
1,100 dual-processor Power Mac G5s (hence 2,200 parallel processors),
which achieved 1.7 teraflops.
The machine is the first supercomputer based on Macs; it is one of the
few supercomputers built entirely from off-the-shelf components and it
cost a bargain-bucket price =97 only $5.2 million. By comparison, most
of the top 10 supercomputers cost about $40 million and up, -- not
mentioning $350 million of the Earth Simulator.
The Beowulf concept (PC-Cluster) is an empowering force. It wrests
high-level computing away from the privileged few and makes low-cost
parallel-processing systems available to those with modest resources.=20
Research groups, high schools, colleges or small business can build or
buy their own Beowulf clusters, realizing the promise of a
supercomputer in every basement.
I would like to let every GUS member institutions around the world
have Beowulf mini supercomputer, say, starting with about a dozen
Power Mac G5s (or equivalent PCs) at about total cost of $50,000,
which is about 100th smaller than the one at Virginia Tech. They are
to be interconnected through Global Broadband Internet (GBI) with the
GRID technology.
(10) BTW, though not as dramatic as Virginia Tech, the University of
Tokyo (one of the largest universities in Japan) currently installed
1,000 iMac for students=92 use on campus =97 reasons: ease of =
maintenance
and repair. I think this is a very rare right decision they have ever
made.
At Columbia University in New York, my colleague (who worked over 30
years at IBM) recently switched from Miscrosoft=92s platform to iBook of
Apple =97 reason: for multimedia Internet access, DVD production, etc.
-- this was the same reason when I switched from Window 3.1 to Mac
almost a dozen years ago.
