(2) BTW, Prof. Giovanni Degli Antoni of the University of Milan is now
working to raise funds for his students=B9 project in Malawi and my
fact-finding and assessment trip to Malawi to create GUS/Malawi with Prof.
Kamwanja of the University of Malawi =8B there are possibilities of having
involvements of UNIDO and UNDP, too.
I suggested him (through his student, simone sala) that, if he could raise
enough fund, I may be able to drop by Milan on my way back to NYC to meet
him and simone and other students to discuss our joint project further.
(3) I would then greatly appreciate it if you can kindly contact Prof. Degl=
i
Antoni and discuss your possible joint effort.
Wishing you a very good luck to your seminar!!

Higher Education in Kiev, Ukraine
Dear dr. Utsumi,
I'm a silent participant to the GU-L but I've seen the May 16 to 19

d
achieving benefits from international standardisation activities in the

Dear Mr Steinberg (cc Ms. Danna Lindsay, Takeshi Utsumi)
I am the project manager for Europe's largest research project on
applications of emerging communications media and information technology to
the 'knowledge society'. The project, MOBIlearn, is in the frame of
US-European national collaboration (coordinated by the NSF and the European
Commisison). It has participation from over 150 corporations and leading
research groups in Europe, Australia and the US. It could be helpful to
developing countries as well as the developed world.
Your name has been given to me by one of my international collaborators, Dr
Paul Lefrere of the Open University. He is involved in the Global
University System, GUS. I gather that the GUS is the kind of public-needs
development that the Markle Foundation takes an interest in. Paul tells me
that, because of the broad societal thrust of MOBIlearn, we should offer to
share the results of our work with you, since it could be helpful to some
of your current projects. If this is potentially of interest to you, just
let me know.
He also suggests that we should alert you to upcoming US-based meetings, in
case you would like to attend or be represented.
Accordingly, please note that our next meeting is hosted by MIT, this week.
The meeting is being held in OKI at MIT, as follows:
MIT - Building N42 Room 186
211 Massachusetts Avenue
Cambridge, MA 02139
on Thursday October 17th.
The formal project meeting is before lunch on Thursday. From lunchtime
onwards, continuing to Friday, the meeting is opened up to US
organisations, such as NSF, to explore synergy with their programs.
I appreciate this is very short notice, but if you are able to come or to
send a representative, a warm welcome would be extended. The venues and
dates of subsequent meetings are to be determined, and I will be able to
give you more notice of those meetings; thus, it is likely that we will be
meeting in Stanford in mid-February.
Cordially,
Giorgio Da Bormida
