Dear E-Colleagues:

(1) Our Amazon Project consists of deploying:

1. CampusNet which will connect six federal universities in the Amazon
region by broadband satellite Internet, and
2. Community Development Networks which will connect higher education,
secondary and elementary schools, libraries, hospitals, local government
offices and NGOs, etc. in the cities of main campuses of the
CampusNet-affiliated universities by broadband wireless Internet. =A0

Dear Alex:

(2) Many thanks for your prompt reply (ATTACHMENT I) to my inquiry of
ATTACHMENT II.

(3) I am very pleased to hear of your substantial progress on your CampusNe=

deployment of some parts of the CampusNet in remote/rural areas of Amazon

Dr. UTsumi,
=20
1 - Thank you. We wish a healthy and happy New Year!
=20
2 - I agree before with the submission of another proposal to Tinker
Foundation. I=B4ll be unavailable from Jan 4-15. However; Prf=BA Jackson can
take care of whatever you need.
=20
3 - We are starting to implement a recently approved project by SIPAM
(former SIVAM) to start part of our distance education program involving
inner cities in Amazonia. They are installing V-Sat antennas for 2-way
communication in 4 cities: Benjamin Constant (border with Columbia),
Eirunepe (border with Bolivia), Parintins (Easter Amazonas State) and Coari
(Central Amazonas State). We are going to equip each of our branch campuses
in this cities, with what we call Multimedia Resource Center, with 15 PCs
with access to the university network via SIPAM=B4s system. The university
hospital in Manaus is also heavily involved in this project with us. It=B4s
really a nice thing!
=20
I hope our sponsors can appreciate it. Actually, this is a hands-on of part
of our project.
=20
=20
Thank you.

Subject: Tinker Foundation

Dear Alex:

(1) I hope you had a very pleasant Christmas.

(2) I just spoke with Ms. Renate Rennie, President of Tinker Foundation.

She regretted not having been able to sponsor our Manaus workshop proposal
for our Amazon project (total about US$140,000), because of the downturn of
economy in recent months, i.e., the price plunge of their endowment stocks.

However, she is willing to reconsider our proposal for their next cycle.

(3) I then asked her if they would consider our another following proposal.

Pls visit;
=93Application for Grass Root Fund for the Manaus Community Development
Network (MCDN)=94 at
http://www.friends-partners.org/GLOSAS/Manaus%20Workshop/Grass_Root_Fund/Ap=
p
lication_Form/Appl_for_GRF_7-18-02.html

You submitted this application (with about US$80,000) to the Grass Root Fun=
d
(GRF) of the Japanese Consulate in Manaus, though you haven=92t heard its
final decision yet.

Our another proposal to Tinker with regard to this MCDN project would be to
ask a matching fund (about US$80,000) to distribute wireless laptop, say,
about 5 laptops to each of the selected (about 5) high schools which will b=
e
hooked up with the wireless Internet with your university, when this GRF is
granted.

Renate then suggested me that I should send her a brief description of this
proposal.

I will compose it in the following two weeks and send you its draft for you=
r
approval.

(4) Renate told me that she would discuss with me around the end of January
which of the above (Manaus workshop proposal or MCDN laptop proposal) is to
be evaluated during their next cycle, since they can evaluate only one
proposal from us at each cycle.

Best, Tak
