project proposal. You, Vesper and I composed it and sent her. She must be
back to her office by now after her trip to Canada since then.

Dear Prof. Dr. Takeshi Utsumi
Chairman, GLOSAS/USA
I would like to express you my consideration. Let me apologize for taking s=
o
long to get back to you. In these days, I was very busy working on the Gras=
s
Root Fund Project. I worked intensively in the preparation of your visit an=
d
the creation of very good conditions for you and your wife. At the present
moment, we have the first version of our Grass Root Fund. We will appreciat=
e
deeply your recommendations and criteria on the present version. On the
other hand, we are organizing your visit for November/ 2002. We have in
Havana Institute of Technology a Scientific Conference addressed to
commemorate the 38th Anniversary of Havana Institute of Technology
Foundation. We have coordinated your visit by means of a Tour Operator. He
has your address, email, telephone and fax number. He will coordinate your
travel from USA to Havana. Therefore, I am organizing your participation in
the Conference and different meetings with Cuban Ministries and other
organizations.
Excuse me, please, for all problems that I have occasioned you and your
wife. I want to express you my gratitude for your kind attention.

With my best wishes,
Sincerely yours,=20

Dear Miguel:
(1) Many, many thanks for your msg with excellent draft of our application
to the Grass Root Fund (GRF).
(2) First of all, pls send me the original application form ASAP. You may
scan it and send me its image in JPEG format so that I can OCR it. (I aske=
d
you this a couple of times in the past months.)
(2) Your draft needs substantial revamping, e.g.,
* Its total budget has to be absolutely within Y10,000,000 (about
US$80,000),
* They prefer project assisting K-12 schools,
* You are asking equipment which our Amazon project expects from the ODA
fund of the Japanese government later, etc.
(3) What is the speed of trunk line Internet coming from outside to your
institute?
1. Can your institute spare some of its bandwidth to a couple of nearby K-1=
2
schools?
2. Can you have line-of-sight to those K-12 schools, i.e., can you see thei=
r
school building from your institute?
(4) At the UNESCO conference last February, one of presenters from the
government of Cuba indicated that most of universities will be
interconnected with 165 Mbps Internet trunk line.
1. Will your institute be one of them to have such broadband connection?
2. When do you expect to have it?
(5) Pls visit our Brazilian colleague=B9s next-to-final application to the GR=
F
at;
http://www.friends-partners.org/GLOSAS/Manaus%20Workshop/Grass_Root_Fund/Ap=
p
lication_Form/MCDN-GR-Draft-6.htm
(6) Pls inquire your ministry of telecommunications if you need a license t=
o
use spread spectrum broadband (10 Mbps) wireless Internet unit with 802.11b
protocol to connect those K-12 schools.
Looking forward to receiving your prompt reply to the above;
Best, Tak

Dear All
The tempo seems to have picked up with Baba's visit to Nigeria, to be
followed=20
by Charles visitin June. However, I agee with Olu Jegede's suggestion for
thorough planning and readiness for the 'unplanned'. There is not a lot of
time=20
left if indeed Tak is to come in July and the w/shop to come up Sept. There
is=20
therefore a need for synergy to optimise use of resources and avoid
duplication=20
of efforts. I therefore suggest:
1. That Baba avails Charles Ugo of details of his visit so that the latter
can=20
build on it and not duplicate grounds already covered by Baba.
2. NOUN to act as secretariat to co-ordinate a real or virtual committee to
handle logistics, contact with stakeholders (including rural-based
institutions, women and youths)
3. Request for volunteers to act o the Committee on basis of what resources
they can contribute to make Tak's vsit and follow-up workshp a success.
4. If this is acceptable, can we request Olu Jegede, the Co-ordinator of
NOUN=20
to initiate an email discussion list to keep all informed and involved as
the=20
process unfolds? (Olu, I appreciate how busy you must be, but NOUN is the
intuitive choice for this effort).
5. ABU, Zaria and Unijos are already aware and prepared to meet Charles whe=
n
he=20
visits; I'd like to arrange similar contacts with other universities in the
north if I have their email/tel contacts.
6. I'd be happy to assist in whatever capacity in addition to present
efforts=20
at sensitizing universities and rural-based tertiary education institutions
in=20
the northen parts.

Dear All

The tempo seems to have picked up with Baba's visit to Nigeria, to be follo=
wed
by Charles visitin June. However, I agee with Olu Jegede's suggestion for <=
BR>
thorough planning and readiness for the 'unplanned'. There is not a lot of =
time
left if indeed Tak is to come in July and the w/shop to come up Sept. There=
is
therefore a need for synergy to optimise use of resources and avoid duplica=
tion
of efforts. I therefore suggest:

1. That Baba avails Charles Ugo of details of his visit so that the latter =
can
build on it and not duplicate grounds already covered by Baba.

2. NOUN to act as secretariat to co-ordinate a real or virtual committee to=
handle logistics, contact with stakeholders (including rural-based
institutions, women and youths)

3. Request for volunteers to act o the Committee on basis of what resources=
they can contribute to make Tak's vsit and follow-up workshp a success.

4. If this is acceptable, can we request Olu Jegede, the Co-ordinator of NO=
UN
to initiate an email discussion list to keep all informed and involved as t=
he
process unfolds? (Olu, I appreciate how busy you must be, but NOUN is the <=
BR>
intuitive choice for this effort).

5. ABU, Zaria and Unijos are already aware and prepared to meet Charles whe=
n he
visits; I'd like to arrange similar contacts with other universities in the=
north if I have their email/tel contacts.

6. I'd be happy to assist in whatever capacity in addition to present effor=
ts
at sensitizing universities and rural-based tertiary education institutions=
in
the northen parts.
