U.S.-Mexico bond
Pace University has teramed up with a Mexican college so that each school
can develop and exchange online education programs.
Entrepreneur helps Pace, Mexican school team up
A Mount Kisco businessman has helped Pace University team up with a
technical college in Mexico so each school can soon begin developing online
education programs for the other.
Raul G. Perez, president and chief executive officer of Unittech Corp.,
was set to travel to Mexico with two Pace administrators to discuss what
programs should be created and how. They will meet with representatives of
Mexico's largest private university system, Instituto Tecnologico y de
Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), as well as Mexico's consulgeneral
based in New York City, H. E. Salvador Beltran del Rio.
Mexico's official interest reflects its commitment under President
Viricente Fox to promote technology and tech education as avenues to growth=
.
Fox has promised to create "digital technitology centers" in 10,000 cities
by the end of his term in 2006 through his "e-Mexico" program.
"With this partnership, Pace University and Monterrey Tech will increas=
e
their leadership in the field of distance education," said Perez, whose
company offers information technology services to major corporations in the
United States and Latin America.
Perez is a Mexican-American who serves on the advisory board of Pace's
School of Computer Science and Information Systems.
Many possibilities
Dr. Susan M. Merritt, dean of Pace's computer science school, said the
partnership is among projects for which the university plans to spend a
$150,000 grant it recently received from the National Science Foundation.
The grant will allow Pace to deliver tech-based learning programs
through the new high-performance computer network being developed by
Internet 2, a consortium of businesses, universities and government
agencies.
"(ITESM) is looking to expand their offerings in English. We're looking
to expand our offerings in Spanish," Merritt said. 'This has a lot of
possibilities."
Merritt is one of the two Pace administrators visiting Mexico. The othe=
r
is Dr. David Sachs, assistant dean and professor of office information
systems at the computer science school.
Pace and ITESM are also collaborating with The Westchester County
Association Inc. and a Monterrey business group to launch the Americas
Regional Partnership, intended to assist smaller Westchester tech businesse=
s
seeking to expand into Mexico.
