Dear Tapio and Marco:
(1) Many thanks for your msgs (ATTACHMENT I and III).
(2) When you will be at the Catalunyan Open University in Barcelona
tomorrow, in addition to your inquiry on their participation in our
UNESCO/UNITWIN Networking program and GUS project, pls also inquire them
about the future possibility of their helping our Cuban colleagues, -- see

Dear Paul:

(5) It will be very substantial step forward if your U.K. Open University
will join in our UNESCO/UNITWIN Networking Program and GUS project, in
addition to your relationship with the Catalunyan Open University in
Barcelona.
Dear Fabrizio:
(6) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT IV).
(7) I am very happy to hear of your progress.
(8) Sorry you cannot meet Tapio at the European Commission=B9s e-learning
conference in Luxemburg this time (see ATTACHMENT I).
However, you can meet Paul and I am sure that he can tell you about our
UNITWIN and GUS projects.
As mentioned last June when you invited me to your university, you may
consider joining in the UNITWIN and GUS, and hence you can have relations
with Paul=B9s Open University and Tapio=B9s university in Tampere.
(9) Pls convey my best personal regards to Gaetano.
Dear Steve:
(10) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT V).
(11) Yes, the agreement of the UNESCO/UNITWIN Networking Program between th=
e
UNESCO and the University of Tampere did not mention of our GUS =8B which can
now be retrieved at;
http://www.friends-partners.org/GLOSAS/Global_University/Global%20Universit=
y
%20System/UNESCO_NGO/UNITWIN/UNITWIN_Agreement/UNITWIN_Agreement.html
(12) This is because our GUS is not incorporated yet, -- I am still working
on its statutes (by-laws). UNESCO then cannot sign any legal document with
GUS.
At the board mtg in Madrid last June, we then decided that the University o=
f
Tampere would obtain the UNITWIN/Chair first, and make our GUS as its
project =8B in a sense, they will kindly act as a surrogate mother to incubat=
e
our GUS.
When the GUS is incorporated in Finland, Marco will work on the transfer of
the UNITWIN Chair to the GUS.
As you see in above, our European colleagues are now vigorously working on
it.
(13) As soon as Shinshu University will conduct their proposed workshop, we
will invite them to become a counterpart UNITWIN Chair =8B though I haven=B9t
heard about the workshop from Prof. Yamasawa yet.
(14) I took care of Mr. Ishiguro=B9s address change. Pls convey my regard to
him next time when you meet him in Tokyo.
Best, Tak=20

Dear friends
In just over a week I will have my first meeting with Professor Gourley,
our new vice-chancellor. At that meeting I expect to discover whether she
wishes to take further, and authorise implementation of, the notional
commitment given by Sir John Daniel to the participation of the Open
University in the UnitWin programme and the GUS.
Would it possible, Tapio, for you to find out from the UOC what their
position is regarding OU participation? If they would like the OU to
participate and work with them in the twin-programme, they need to say. It
need not be formal. For example, they could copy me and/or Professor
Gourley in any email they send to you. It would be helpful to know their
position in advance of my own meeting.
Best wishes
Paul

of course, we can discuss this matter with Gabriel Ferrat=E8 and Francisco

Thank you very much, Tak, for suggesting my partecipation at the
conference il Luxenburg.
Tapio sent me a message just after yours, giving some information, and I
thank him very much.
Paul kindly gave me the address of the conference site.
I will keep in touch with both of them for arranging a meeting in
Luxembourg.
On Friday we had a meeting of the CRII (the information science
organization at the University of Insubria), and decided that I will be at
the Conference. I needed this because I am not in the e-learning commission
promoted by the Rector, and I did not want to look like I was invading
their territory.
Anyhow, right now I am the coordinator for the Campus-One project (some
1.800.000) euros for my University, 60% local and 40% from Rome), and,
between many other things, this includes e-learning. I will be the arm of
the e-learning commission (headed by Gaetano), which is defining the
strategies.
I think that in 3-4 months the three campuses of my university (Varese,
Como and Busto Arsizio) will be connected by a double ring in fiber. Varese
and Como are already connected, and we have an internet link at 2 Mb.
The ring will be used for experiments in e-learning, that we are
planning to perform together with the Universities of Milano Bicocca, and
Milano 1, the alma mater of both Bicocca and Insubria.
Milano 1 already has her own distribution platform, and we are planning
to modify the one (open source) that has been developed at Insubria for
community networks. Bicocca, I guess, will use one of the two.
Although the deployment strategies are not yet well defined, at Insubria
we already know pretty well what will be our philosophy behind e-learning.
There are three levels: strategy, methodology, and technology. I am
interested mainly in methodology which, in my mind, is the most important
of the three.
I will let you know what is boiling in the pot.
Best
Fabrizio

Sensei,
Congratulations on the Uni-Twin program, although GUS
is not specifically mentioned in the agreement.
Can we have a Chair over here in Japan?
Japan's "Mr. Internet," Prof. Jun Murai of Keio University
highly praised my recent efforts. Perhaps I could send you
some more details in another message.
Mr. Ishiguro has sometimes mentioned collaborating with you,
and he has been very helpful in Tokyo. Probably because of
temporary server problems, he no longer receives gu-l mail,
so could you please subscribe him to the list? ->
"Motokuni Ishiguro" <mishiguro@jaei.org>
I'm planning two trips to Tokyo this month and Mayumi Tanimoto,
who moved from Softbank, would like me to present on e-learning
at NTT Data. I don't know if Shinshu University would be interested
in contacts with NTT Data or not, but let me know what you think.
Of course Shinshu is also a possible candidate for the UniTwin Chair.
My next message will be a first announcement in English of some good news.
Best wishes,
Steve

1.800.000) euros for my University, 60% local and 40% from Rome), and,
between many other things, this includes e-learning. I will be the arm of <=
BR>
the e-learning commission (headed by Gaetano), which is defining the
strategies.
I think that in 3-4 months the three campuses of my unive=
rsity (Varese,
Como and Busto Arsizio) will be connected by a double ring in fiber. Varese=
and Como are already connected, and we have an internet link at 2 Mb.
The ring will be used for experiments in e-learning, that=
we are
planning to perform together with the Universities of Milano Bicocca, and <=
BR>
Milano 1, the alma mater of both Bicocca and Insubria.
Milano 1 already has her own distribution platform, and w=
e are planning
to modify the one (open source) that has been developed at Insubria for
community networks. Bicocca, I guess, will use one of the two.
Although the deployment strategies are not yet well defin=
ed, at Insubria
we already know pretty well what will be our philosophy behind e-learning. =
There are three levels: strategy, methodology, and technology. I am
interested mainly in methodology which, in my mind, is the most important <=
BR>
of the three.
I will let you know what is boiling in the pot.
Best

Congratulations on the Uni-Twin program, although GUS
is not specifically mentioned in the agreement.
Can we have a Chair over here in Japan?

Japan's "Mr. Internet," Prof. Jun Murai of Keio University
highly praised my recent efforts. Perhaps I could send you
some more details in another message.

Mr. Ishiguro has sometimes mentioned collaborating with you,
and he has been very helpful in Tokyo. Probably because of
temporary server problems, he no longer receives gu-l mail,
so could you please subscribe him to the list? ->

"Motokuni Ishiguro" <mishiguro@jaei.org>

I'm planning two trips to Tokyo this month and Mayumi Tanimoto,
who moved from Softbank, would like me to present on e-learning
at NTT Data. I don't know if Shinshu University would be interested
in contacts with NTT Data or not, but let me know what you think.
Of course Shinshu is also a possible candidate for the UniTwin Chair.

My next message will be a first announcement in English of some good news.<=
BR>
Best wishes,
