Dear kola:
==========
(1) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT I) with a generous invitation to
the training workshop of your Peace Education for West African
Communities (PEWAC) which is to be held from November 19 to 23rd, 2001
in Epe, Nigeria.
It will be my great honor and privilege to accept your kind
invitation, in condition that all travel, hotel and per diem expenses
are to be provided.
This will be an excellent opportunity for my fact-finding for your and
Tunji's organizing a workshop in the near future, in order for you to
form a coalition which will then establish a Global University
System/Nigeria.
Dear Tunji:
===========
Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT XI). Pls contact Ambassador
Segun Olusola as Kola suggests.
(2) As for your fund raising, pls follow the suit of Mother Cole in
Liberia (ATTACHMENT II) to get the Grass Root Fund of the Japanese
Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Community Empowerment Program fund
of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) which I mentioned in
my previous list distribution.
(a) See "(9/9/01)Liberia operation," at
http://www.friends-partners.org/pipermail/gu-l/2001q3/date.html
(b) ATTACHMENT II.
Pls, however, note that the grantee has to be in Nigeria, not in
Finland.
(3) I agree with you 100% that "Peace Education is very important to
achieve Culture of Peace in our modern societies" -- to stop/prevent
such horrible things that happened yesterday (11.Sept. 2001) and in
Nigeria (ATTACHMENT III).
Dear Jose, Tapio and many other e-colleagues:
=============================================
(4) Many thanks for your emails and phone calls we received from around
the world expressing your concern (ATTACHMENT IV, V and VI) in
relation with the horrible terrorist act of yesterday.
Hisae, my wife, and I are all right. We saw a big smoke from down
town Manhattan from our window -- it is still coming out. Beautiful
twin towers of the World Trade Center were done!!
(5) We planned to attend the Tai Ji Men's ceremony of ringing the Bell of
Peace at the U.N. Plaza yesterday (ATTACHMENT VII) -- see their
wonderful performance in my previous list distributions at;
(a) [gu-l] Trip to Taipei, Taiwan to attend WCA 2001 on 3/30 to
4/3/01 (Part 1 of 2)
(b) [gu-l] Trip to Taipei, Taiwan to attend WCA 2001 on 3/30 to
4/3/01 (Part 2 of 2)
(c) [gu-l] Angel of Peace and Love (fwd)
(d) [gu-l] Invitation to Global Peace Assembly in Taipei, Taiwan
from 8/13th to 16th

in Taipei
(f) [gu-l] Paper "Quest for Global Peace" for Global Peace Assembly
in Taipei
(g) [gu-l] Transcript of 5 minutes greeting speech
(h) [gu-l] (1) My trips to Taipei and Tokyo and (2) ESL program
(i) [gu-l] Trip to Taipei, Taiwan from 8/12 to 8/20/01
They are retrievable at the URL at
http://www.friends-partners.org/pipermail/gu-l/
Dear Larry:
===========
Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT VIII).
(6) However, Larry called me in the night before of 9/11th saying that the
ceremony was stopped by the objection from Beijing government.
If we had gone to Manhattan to attend the ceremony, we would have had
terrible difficulty to come back our home since all subways were
completely stopped yesterday.
(7) Yesterday's terrorists' act (i.e., the Act of War by President Bush),
Beijing government's bigotry mentioned above and Ms. William's
incidence (ATTACHMENT IX) are clearly against the good will of peace
lovers around the world.
Dear Dr. Hong:
==============
Hisae and I were very sorry we could not meet you this time. We
hope you can make very safe trip back to Taipei.
If you will drop-by Hawaii, pls make sure to call John
Southworth (ATTACHMENT X).
(8) I therefore feel an urgent need for peace education as you eloquently
stated in the last para of your msg.
Best, Tak

Dear Prof. Utsumi
Even though you have not been hearing from us constantly, we in AREF (African
Refugees Foundation) have been working hard on Peace Educaton training for
teachers in West Africa. We started the project last year in collaboration
with Chris Ogunbajo Foundation - Peace & Conflict Resolution Centre in
Nigeria. The project PEWAC (Peace Education for West African Communties) was
substantially financed by Peace Education Institute (PEI) based in Helsinki.
Mrs. Helena Kekkonen of PEI, UNESCO Peace Prize winner in the 80s has been
very supportive. We focus on simple methods to train Primary and Secondary
school teachers and also convince the Governments in the West African
countries to make Peace Education a major part of the curriculum.
This year the PEI, Helsinki is again giving fund to hold a PEWAC training
workshop in Epe Nigeria from 19-23, November 2001. AREF would have liked to
invite you and make it possible for you to use the opportunity to meet and
discuss but financially limited. We would have liked to also meet Mr. Tunji
Lardner but unfortunately we have not even been in contact with him. He may
please contact Ambassador Segun Olusola through AREF's e-mail and also copy
me. We are still looking for funds for the PEWAC training workshop. You may
be of help to direct us to possible donors.
Peace Education is very important to achieve Culture of Peace in our modern
societies. The IT World needs a serious focus on building Peace Culture by
educating our children right from the kindergarten to stop/prevent such
horrible things that happened yesterday (11.Sept. 2001) in USA.
Let Us Together Build Peace Education For Children!
Sincerely,
kola

Dear Dr. UTSUMI,
Please tell Mother Cole that Grassroot Grant Aid issue for projects in
Liberia is now handled by the Emabssy of Japan in Accra, Ghana. Documentation
is available at Economic/Economic Co-oeration Section in the Embassy, which
address/tel/fax is shown below.
She needs to contact the Embassy in the approval process anyway, so it might

Religious and Ethnic Clashes in Nigeria Spread, Killing at Least 165
By REUTERS
AGOS, Nigeria, Sept. 11 (Reuters) Three days of ethnic and religious
clashes in Jos, in central Nigeria, have killed at least 165 people and
wounded 928, and the violence has spread, Red Cross officials said today.
"We just received a report from our men in Jos that fighting spread to
Langtang, Pankshin, Bukuru and Heipang, where people were killed yesterday,"
said Abiodun Orebiyi, acting secretary general of the Nigeria Red Cross.
Heipang and Bukuru are on the outskirts of Jos and include its airport.
Pankshin and Langtang are two major towns to the southeast of Jos, the
capital of Plateau State, a region that is mainly Christian but has a sizable
Muslim population.
"We do not know how bad the situation in these towns is, but our men there
say it cannot be as bad as the situation in Jos," he said. "We will not be
able to release any new casualty figures because that is capable of inflaming
passions and sparking reprisals across the country."
The government has routinely played down the casualty figures in previous
communal or religious unrest to forestall reprisal killings in Nigeria, a
volatile multi-ethnic country of more than 110 million people.
The International Committee of the Red Cross provided the latest casualty
figures, quoting the Nigeria Red Cross. Antonella Notari, spokeswoman at the
Geneva headquarters of the Swiss-based committee, said the toll could rise.
Jos looked peaceful today, with more and more people venturing into the
streets. Overnight the sporadic shooting that had characterized previous
days, as soldiers struggled to enforce a night curfew, was markedly reduced.
The curfew remains in force.
The riots flared following a quarrel between Christians and Muslims after
Muslim prayers last Friday.
Tension has been building in Jos for about a month.
Some members of the majority Christian popualtion of Plateau State had
complained about the appointment of a Muslim to lead the state's poverty
alleviation program.

Knowing you work in New York I wonder how well did you handle the
consequences of the terrorist act some hours ago.
I do hope that this type of things will show everyone that we all live in the
same ship: EARTH, and that we have to learn to live with each other.
Things here go slow, because the drought, foreign debt, the incomming
national elections (to be held next February) have loosen up the ground.

You have no doubt seen the news of the horrific destruction of the World
Trade Center in New York City. Many of our members have been concerned,
because SSPI has had its offices in the World Trade Center since January.
I am grateful to report that, on August 6, we relocated to a building several
blocks from the Trade Center. As a result, our staff is safe and our office
suffered no damage. Our complete contact information is below.
SSPI's office will, however, be closed, most probably until Monday, September
17, because lower Manhattan has been blocked off to all but emergency
traffic.
Thank you for the telephone calls and emails we have received expressing your
concern. While we are grateful for our escape, we are deeply grieved for all
those we left behind.

Landmine activist says not afraid of anonymous threats
By Haley Chang
Staff Reporter
The 1997 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jody Williams, a longtime anti-landmine activist, said Taiwan, while having the resources to clear landmines
should also assist nations in the region that have mine problems.
Williams, who received a phone call and an e-mail from a Chinese man
who threatened her for her attendance at the peace forum, said such a point
of view coming from this China national was completely unacceptable.
Speaking at a joint interview with the Taiwan News and the Chinese-language Taiwan News yesterday, Williams, shared her experiences in promoting
the movement to ban landmines as well as the little incident before she left
for Taiwan Friday.
Ms. Jody Williams is the founding coordinator of the International
Campaign to Ban Landmines. She and the ICBL were awarded the. 1997 Nobel
Peace Prize for their contribution in banning antipersonnel landmines.
"It was some gentleman that he said they (the Chinese government) knew
I was coming here. I immediately, thought 'it (is) none of your business
where I go.' My own government probably knows where I'm going but they never
tell me what I should do," Williams said.
"I remained silent for a moment but the man proceeded and questioned
if I was aware of 'a very delicate situation here. I immediately responded
(saying) I had no idea why he was calling me. I travelled all over the world.
I'm a Nobel laureate and I say what I want. I do what I want, too," Williams
added.
China or the Chinese government can express their opinion, Williams
said, but how they chose to express their opinion to me was inappropriate.
"If they wish to discuss landmine problems with me and possible
movement that could be conducted by the Chinese government, I'll be happy to
offer any assistance. But don't call me and tell me what I can't do and where
I can't go," Williams said.
Williams said that she even received an the e-mail, telling her that
she did not know what she was doing and she should not try to upset the "one-China" policy.
"I moved the e-mail to miscellaneous and I got on the airplane," she
said with a grin.
Touching on the issue of landmines, Williams said that Taiwan has the
all the resources and should also assist nations in the region that have mine
problems.
"There were very few countries that have the resources to clear mines
and I think your country does. You have the resources to clear the mines and
you should," Williams said, adding that the assistance does not necessarily
need to be huge amount of money.
"That will also show Taiwan's desire to, if not with the U.N., but the
international community on the issue that has been concerned," she said.
