Dear Barry:
===========

(1) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT II) in response to my msg
     (ATTACHMENT I).

(2) I shall wait for your reply to my msg (ATTACHMENT III).

Dear Roger:
===========

(3) You have met Barry during our Tampere event in Finland in August,
     1999.

(4) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT IV).

(5) About the Drexel University's project mentioned in my previous msg,
     pls retrieve an article Drexel Creates 100% Unwired Cybercampus" at
     <http://www.wbt2.com/article.cfm?id=14>.

          Dear Barry:
          ===========

          You also once visited the University City Science Center in
          Philadelphia for our wireless project (though not succeeded at
          that time). Drexel U. is just a few blocks from the center and
          you had to pass through their campus on Market Street.

(6) You may also be interested in City University of Hong Kong inaugurates
     Lucent Technologies Orinoco Wireless Solution for its campus" which
     can be retrieved at
     <http://www.lucent.com/press/0300/000315.nsa.html>.

(7) You can find many interesting info about wireless and Orinoco at
     <http://www.lucent.com>.

(8) I am sure that you can more effectively utilize your new CuSeeMe PRO
     version of video reflector and the expensive "Meeting Point" server,
     when you set up the broadband wireless Internet unit around your
     campus -- as Drexel U. and the CityU of Hong Kong did.

Dear Mr. Wang:
==============

(9) I read your article about the use of Orinoco at the City University of
     Hong Kong.

(10) I would like to know if there is a representative of Lucent/Orinoco in
     Manila, the Philippines who can do the same as Electronic Business
     Solutions Limited did for the CityU.

(11) Pls visit my schematic diagram for community development in developing
     countries at
     http://www.friends-partners.org/GLOSAS/Tampere_Conference/Global_Broadband_Internet/Global_Broadband_Diagram.html

Dear Jesus, Ralph and Ofelia:
=============================

(12) Many thanks for your revised proposal for our mini-workshop in Manila.
     I am working on it now to incorporate your info into our travel grant
     application which is to be submitted by Kim Obbink to the US National
     Science Foundation (NSF).

(13) Pls ask your technical people to review the info mentioned above.

(14) If this will work, this would be much better and cheaper than E1 (2
     Mbps) terrestrial line with very expensive monthly recurring costs.

(15) In a separate mail, I will send you a PDF file about the Orinoco
     Outdoor Router System which Barry kindly sent to me yesterday.

Dear Alex:
==========

(16) I am waiting for a map of those organizations to be connected with the
     similar broadband wireless unit in your Manaus, which I asked you a
     few month ago.

Dear Roger and Barry:
=====================

(17) Let's work together for Manila project first and then for Manaus.

Best, Tak

Dear Barry:

(1) It has been some time since our last correspondence. I hope you are
well.

(2) Our Manila project is getting hot. There are now two schools involved,
one has 128 Kbps as to be a major ISP, and the other (about 5 miles away from
the former) is a medical school wich has 56 Kbps leased line. Both are in
line of sight.

(3) I wonder if we can set up a spread spectrum wireless connection between
the two schools so that the medical school can enjoy accessing 128 Kbps.
(Looking for the future, the connection may start with 10 Mbps units.)

(4) I would like to hear of your suggestions, including the list of
necessary units and their approximate costs.

Thanks in advance.

Best, Tak

Hello Tak! Yes, I am well. I left the government last Fall and am now a
private sector consultant. I'm just finishing up a contract here at CRC, and
expect that there will be another one following it in a month or two.
However, I do have more flexibility now in doing other consulting work, so if
you hear of something that may be of interest, please let me know.

Wireless LAN technology has advanced quite a bit in the past couple of years.
Today, I would go directly to high speed when good paths are available. The
hot technology right now is IEEE 802.11b (11 Mbps, 2.4 GHz). There are many
products available, but I think the leading supplier is probably Lucent, with
their Orinoco product line (http://wavelan.com/).

I have attached a data sheet for their outdoor router products, which would
probably be a good fit for the Manila application (provided that local PTT
regulations permit it).

The routers cost about $1200. When you add the cost of the antennas and
feedlines, you can probably set up a 11 Mbps wireless system for less than
$2K per end. I can't say much beyond that without knowing the details of the
sites.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Barry

Dear Barry:

(1) Many thanks for your prompt reply.

(2) Your have left CRC this is great and congratulations!!

(3) I am now working on our travel grant application to be submitted to the
NSF for our Manila workshop. I will include you in it last time for our
Tampere event, you were Canadian goverrnment employee so that I could not
include you in our application to the NSF.

(4) I saw many new products at the Wireless Internet exhibits at Javitz
Center a couple of weeks ago, including Lucent's.

It seems that your day finally arrived!!

(5) Once we set it up at two locations in Manila, can we further have
Metricom's mobil wireless system from the locations? -- I am thinking to use
them with laptop/notebook with, say, an Aircard, etc.

Since Apple/Macintosh/Airport uses the same 2.4 GHz, can they use it with
WaveLan and Metricom together?

(6) As you may know, there are many mini-bus which were converted out of army
jeeps in Vietnam. I wonder if they interfere to the Lucent's or Metricom's
wireless systems.

(7) Pls visit my schematic diagram at
http://www.friends-partners.org/GLOSAS/Tampere_Conference/Global_Broadband_Internet/Global_Broadband_Diagram.html

Looking forward to receiving your response soon,

Best, Tak

I am quite interessted in what you have learned at the wirless broadband
internet, and do have some monies this year, to invest locally within HCCS
and perhaps to partener with others,

, what can you tell me about what you saw available, about costs,etc,after
our Spring Break I am wanting to move on this, making purchases in April,

, yes just returned Monday AM from the Pearl River in Southern China in fact.

By the way we have new CuSeeMe PRO version of video reflector, the expensive
"Meeting Point" server, access loaned to Colette for her European event in
two weeks, and available to any Glosas partners, want to keep this in as
heavy use as possiblecan even streamVIDEO live to real video from the CuSeeMe
sessions,very nice performance with this 2001 version of the software
compared to late 1990's
