Dave and fpspacers,
I made a special visit to the local Border's Express in the local mall (it's
a "hole in the wall" type of place, and is fighting to keep open) this
afternoon, after Dave gave me the "heads up" about the book's contents. I
located a copy of Mary Roach's book, and did a quick skim of it. (I only
had about seven minutes, but I attempted to make good use of that seven I
had.)
I can confirm Dave's assessment. My contributions appear in chapters 1, 2,
and 12. I didn't have time to look in each chapter to see if there were
direct quotations or not (although I found one, mentioned in the next
paragraph here).
In chapter 2, the author actually quotes an article of mine directly,
although for the life of me, I don't recognize the quotation. (But it has
been some years since I wrote the piece she quotes from.) About Laveikin.
The article in question that is sourced (ditto for all chapters) is the
following;
Pesavento P. From Aelita to the International Space Station: the
psychological and social effects of isolation on Earth and in space. Quest:
the history of spaceflight qrtrly 8(2):4-23, 2000.
Cheers!
An additional comment: I did a quick scan through the "Sex in Space"
chapter (yes, there is one, called the "Three Dolphin Club"), and she really
doesn't add very much to the already accumulated information that I imparted
back in 2000. Although some of the cosmonauts teased Polyakov about his
"perhaps" having carnal relations with Kondakova...
Also, for the record, JimO is also quoted in the "sex in space" chapter (if
my memory serves in this somewhat of a paraphrase): "Those that don't know
talk, while those that do know, don't."
Best,
Peter

I posted this last week. I ordered the book - it is indeed quite good, and
includes inputs from several FPSpacers, including Peter Pesavento, John
Charles, and (modest cough) Yours Truly.

'Packing for Mars'
By MARY ROACH

Highlights of Mary Roach's look at the way humans adapt to
spacefaring include zestful accounts of human-waste
disposal, body odor control and astral sexual desire.
