[FPSPACE] Soviet 11F94 Insulation Blanket

Thanks for the clarification, Dave. I had wondered about the
scaffolding, and hadn't realized this LK and the EuroDisney model were
one and the same. It's a pity the refurbishment removed part of the
finished appearance, but understandable and in keeping with traditional
Soviet/Russian spacecraft display practices.

It may be possible to study this model before and after, compare it to
other models, extrapolate, and come up with a reasonable assumption of
what the final LK configuration was planned to look like.

Best Regards,

David L. Rickman

The LK at MAI was first seen by westerners when the MIT team visited
Lab
601 back in 1989 or so. At the time, it was just another piece of
hardware for students to look over, so it had cuts into the base
showing
the tankage interior, and more cuts into the back of the cabin to show
the instrumentation there. It was just another teaching aid to show
engineering students general spacecraft design and construction. It
was
encased in scaffolding then, with an upper deck at the level of the
entry hatch. You can see the platform in the pictures. Arrangements
were made in the early 1990's to display it at EuroDisney in Paris, so
it was refurbished, including filling in all of the various cuts,
before
it was disassembled and shipped there. At the end of the visit it was
brought back to MAI where it can be seen today. So the original
insulation that you see in that picture was removed as part of the
refurbishment process and is not in any of the Paris pictures nor Lab
601 today.

Thanks for pointing this out, Charlie. Somehow in all my studies of
this craft I failed to notice that this model was partially "clothed".
Admittedly, I have seen fewer images of this MAI LK model than any
other. Does anyone know if there is an online collection of photos of
this model? Or would anyone who has been to the Moscow Aviation
Institute and photographed this LK be willing to share publicly or
off-forum?

Thanks again,

David L. Rickman

Negative. The original MIT pictures showed the silver cloth insulation
on the LK and that brings to question the color of the LOK insulation

FPSpacers,

Our friend Sergey Andeev has posted another doozie of a photo, this
time of an LK with visible insulation blanket. This is the first I've
seen this...

The particular Photo is here...
