[FPSPACE] Remember that incredible Moon map from National Geographic in 1969?

Just before the United States landed the first men on the Moon with

Apollo 11, National Geographic came out with one of their excellent

magazine articles on the upcoming adventure and included a map of

the near and far sides of Earth's natural satellite with lots of other

lunar details.

In case anyone remembers The Mary Tyler Moore Show of the 1970s,

the NG Moon Map was prominenly displayed behind Lou Grant (played

by Ed Asner) in his office.

It is hardly too much to say that the NG Moon Map is a true work of art.

This past summer the blog Kelso's Corner had a two-part interview with

the man most responsible for the famous map, Richard Furno, which you

can get to from this link:

One interesting tidbit among many I learned from the two-part interview

is that the first Mercury spacecraft to be test-launched in 1959 had to

be taken to the pad on a borrowed truck on top of a matress! Yes, there

is a photo of this event.

Enjoy,

Larry
