Hi Larry, all - 

For quite some time Tunguska was thought to be the result of the impact of one of the final fragments of Comet Encke.

If comets or "dark comets" can explosively fragment, with any of the resulting fragments heading towards the Earth, the impact hazard just grew far far more severe, as early tracking may not give as good a warning time as was hoped for, and NECs that were expected to safely miss the Earth may not.
