Hi Larry -

You know, many people share your "ark" or "lifeboat" Mars concept.

When asked about the NEO hazard, Griffin would bring "life boat Mars" up all the time, while he was wasting billions of dollars on the Ares 1 launcher. Zubrin would talk about "putting all our eggs in one basked", as though Mars was a basket like the Earth, or could be made like the Earth.

I think your calculations may be a little off. You probably want to read through this collection of material:
http://www.nss.org/resources/library/planetarydefense/index.htm
In particular the 2005 CAPS paper.

For frequency of impact, there's the holocene start impact catalogues in the Cambridge Conference archives, supplemented by those documented in my book.
