He appears set to spend a fortune punishing the Afghans
for 9/11, despite the fact that not a single Afghan was
involved. And hardly anyone expects him to nab Osama.

Yes, the Afghans were friends of Osama's, but so were
Rambo III and his fellow cavemen.

 From Wikipedia:
"At the end of the battle Rambo and Trautman say goodbye
to their Mujahideen friends and leave Afghanistan to go
 home."

Alas, coalitions come and go. After toppling the Taliban
regime the US has continued to spend so much money
promoting Westerns values in Afghanistan through the
barrel of a gun that they could have paid for a manned
 trip to Mars instead.

When I travelled through the country many years ago
( during the reign of King Muhammed Zâhir Shah ) the
country was at peace with itself and the world. If
Russians, Arabs, and Americans could be persuaded
to stay away, peace and the Afghan people would get
 another chance to join together.
