The latest NEO news is that the low estimate of the cometary impact hazard is finally being rejected. Given the position of Comet Schwassmann Wachmann 3 in 2022, a mere 13 years from now, this is very good news indeed.
Note especially Morrison's report on the NRC study due from Harvard at the end of this year by the order of the Congress, and the adaptation of WISE use.
I suspect that Firestone and Kennett's work on the comet impacts at the start of the Holocene has led to public concern about the cometary impact hazard and their support for and demand for effective measures.
I think it likely that this trend will continue.
