Further to this (and thanks for the info you sent to me off-list), it appears that (3) the newby must have paid in full.

I understand that info about financials is hard to come by, but it appears (based on your off-list message) that full payment is not required of the backups. Presumably it is required of the prime space tourist before launch (possibly including any escrow arrangements, I speculate). If so, do the Russians require that any backup who fills a prime slot (as Ansari did) pay in full before flying?

That's quite interesting : with two former backups awaiting their turn (Halik and Dyson) the seat is going to a newby? That guy must a) be quite fluent in Russian already and b) capable of stuffing a year's cosmonaut training into less than four months. If it's true I'm truly impressed. And surprised....
