In the late 1990's Dan Goldin had this really good plan to cut the shuttle into a heavy lifter, and planned to land men on Mars by 2020.

But he was subjected to merciless attacks and hobbled as much as possible. 

The Energia storage shed collapse marked the other end of the possibility of manned Mars flight in my lifetime.

There were a lot of people who suspected when it was announced that the Ares 1 would be as bad as it has turned out. 

In other news, Kim Jong Un is being promoted. This is going to sound bizarre, but I still wonder if Korea may end up  re-unifying as a "socialist" (in a limited sense) state with a constitutional monarch.
