Senator Rockefeller's question about the relevance of NASA was well put:

90 to 95% of the people living in North America died due to impact in 10,900 BC. NASA is doing as little as it can to deal with the problem; their budget is around $17,000 million per year.

Manned Mars flight is not of much value in comparison. 
The analysis of cores from the Carolinas has not been published by the USGS, more than 3 years after they were taken.
