Hi Jens - 

The only way of excavating a hole that large, or freeing the volatiles from Mars crust, would be by diverting an impactor into it. Thus tera-forming Mars requires the same technologies we need now to keep the Earth habitable.

So we return to where we started, with CAPS, mankind's next goal in space.

Surely you understand this by now, you're already in space, a passenger aboard spaceship Earth.
