Hi D.S. - 

No, its not amazing at all - the back contamination problem has been written about and studied for years, including in particular by Soviet engineers who had a real chance of going - thus it is absolutely not amazingly to most of the people here, who were intimately familiar with their programs. 

In point of fact, the problem was examined for the Soviet manned Mars orbital mission with a sample return from the surface of Mars by a rover operated from Mars orbit - it was concluded that the sample would have to be sterilized, and then examined for formerly living organisms.
