[FPSPACE] Ares 1/ Ares 5 or Direct?

As Griffin was heading out the door, he appealed to the "manned Mars enthusiasts" for support of Ares 1/ Ares 5, which argument was nearly disposed of here:

I don't mean to harp on this, but the US space program is at a critical juncture, one at least as critical as the Korolev/Glushko fuel dispute.  

In my opinion, if Ares 1 continues, it will be a disaster on the order of the N-1 fiasco. 

I don't want to  loose the shuttle technologies and skilled work force.
