The Good News: 

It appears that Ares 1 is understood to be so bad that it is no longer possible for Thiokol to railroad it through:

Note especially that in a nice bi-partisan way the Republicans have given Obama and his team more time to work this through.

Note also that the Direct team has not only launch vehicles but entire architectures laid out, architectures which will really open up the possibilities for international co-operation.
