Zond 2 was a flyby, but testing the trajectory that would be followed by a lander with the lowest possible entry speed into the atmosphere. It passed Mars after Mariner 4 (early August, compared to mid-July) so Mariner would have got pictures first anyway. Zond 1 (for Venus) had a lander. Brian Harvey Dublin, Ireland
