Dear HASTRO-L colleagues,

This is sort of recent astronomy history, but....

I have recently learned that during the Apollo 11 landings a local amateur
used a home-built radio telescope to listen in on the person-to-person radio
transmissions between the astronauts. I was told the story by a reporter who
was there, reporting the story at the time. I hunted through the archives of
the local paper and sure enough, there was his story with photos, etc.
describing the event. Apparently they even recorded a couple of tape reels.

So I'm working on writing up something about this -- if it checks out, it
seems like an interesting story, especially considering all the people who
claim we never went to the moon -- an "independent verification" of men on
the moon (especially since they used a directional antenna and had some
trouble getting it aimed at the moon and picking up the signals because it
was cloudy). Has anyone heard of any other incidents like this? More than
one person must have had this idea back during the Apollo days, but I have
not come across any reports of it among the various efforts to debunk the
"Moon Deniers" that I have looked over.
