Kudos to Excalibur Almaz for not being afraid of a hatch in the heat
shield. This has been amply demonstrated on Gemini/MOL, TKS and of course every
shuttle with 5 (I think?) heat shield doors.
It is a brilliant design using the thermal expansion differentials of
Titanium (sleeve) and steel (ring) to increase the hatch seal's integrity as
the radiant outside temperature increases. While the Almaz design was gener
ally ahead of its time, to Chelomei this particular hatch design was the
"highlight of Almaz".
