Hi -
This is a major story:
http://www.space-travel.com/reports/Rocket_Launches_May_Need_Regulation_To_Prevent_Ozone_Depletion_999.html
Why is the ozone so important? Think of it as a valve in a transistor: not only does it keep out UV, it bounces back IR, if I remember correctly. The ozone holes that we currently have probably account for some of the polar melting that 's been observed, and people are having to be treated for and are dying from skin cancer in several nations due to the increased UV.
Further, my guess is that the energy differentials due to these holes probably accounts for some of the swings and violent weather. My guess for decades has been that sunspot activity leads to higher ozone, which in turn led to warmer temperatures globally. There was this fellow Father Ricardo... but then that's a long story...
