A slightly obscure but important element of the US space
surveillance/intelligence system is the Defense Special Missile and
Astronautics Center at NSA headquarters in Ft. Meade, Maryland. (The
acronym, DEFSMAC, is universally pronounced "deaf-smack.") Some
