The late Stephen Gorove had a large
collection of space law papers and documents that
he Center now is processing so they can be made
available to researchers. Andrew G. Haley's
papers are part of that collection. He was the
author of one of the world's seminal space law
texts, Space Law and Government (Appleman,
Century, Croft, 1963). This week PJ found an
historic letter in the collection. It was written
by the late Arthur C. Clarke to Haley in 1956.
In it, Clark sets out his vision for what later
became known as the the Global Positioning System
(GPS), direct broadcasting satellites and more.
The letter is in pristine condition and
has Clarke's signature and a handwritten note.
Given the recent passing of Arthur C. Clarke, the
Center decided that this letter will be of
particular interest to the space community at
this time. Therefore, we are making it available
through the Res Communis blog at this time. Click
on www.resscommunisblog.com, scroll down to
"Haley Archive: Arthur C. Clarke August 1956
Letter on GPS, DBS, and more", then click on the
thumbnail image to see and read the letter.
