Both the Juno I launcher and the Jupiter C missile had a rotating
"barrel" as its second and third stages. The second stage consisted
of 11 Baby Sergeant solid rocket engines, the third stage of three
such engines. This is according to
http://www.spaceline.org/rocketsum/juno-I.html
Now look at the JPL image at the page numbered as 21 in
http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/explorer/downloads/Explorer1.pdf (9.7 MB)
This image shows an inert reentry capsule on top of the second/third
stage of a Jupiter C. Around the base of the capsule there is a
circular plate with several circular holes cut in it. Eight holes are
visible. Probably there are 11 holes, three hidden behind the reentry shield.
Through these holes we look down on some structures each with a
hemispherical top.
Three questions:
1. Are these "structures with a hemispherical top" the Baby Sergeant
rocket engines of the second stage?
2. Are the three Baby Sergeant engines of the third stage right below
the reentry capsule, surrounded by the 11 engines in the second stage?
3. When the second and third stages separate, does the third stage
simply slide out from the middle of the second stage?
