We've seen this some time ago in the US --
Aldrin talks about watching something that looks like
spacecraft generated debris, probably a SLA panel,
maybe a torn-off insulation fragment. It's been known
about for decades. None of the astronauts thought it was
an alien visitor... they just wondered (as they SHOULD have)
what part of the spacecraft had come loose, or had been
jettisoned as planned.
NASA did a 1971 report to characterize stuff seen out
the window -- called 'moon pigeons'...

Don' forget -- the hunk of left wing RCC from
Columbia broke loose and drifted away on the
flight's second day. Had any astronaut been looking out the window
and saw it, and reported it, and the ground wondered about it,
they might have had enough clues to look more closely at
possible damage. So you WANT to collect any and all
visual reports of nearby stuff.
