So far as we know, Tikhonravov had overall supervision of the N-1
design, which was them aimed at building the TMK or Heavy
Interplanetary Ship, to Mars. Indeed, the joke was that TMK actually
stood for Tikhonravov, Mikhail Klavdeivich, after his name.
As for the end of his career, when on 3rd August 1964, the Soviet
Union formally decided to send men to land on the moon, Tikhonravov's
department #9 in OKB-1 was disbanded and its documentation was
transferred to Chelomei’s OKB-52. Tikhonravov chose not to go, but
he stayed on in OKB-1 for another 18 months and finally left around the
time of Korolev’s death in January 1966. He was at retirement age.
His name was on a couple of publications up to 1967. His contact with
Mishin after Jan. 66 was probably minimal.
