Very nice article.  I was particularly struck by the following
bit:

   idea of “paying for it with a song,” but had they
   accepted his serious offer of signing over all
   rights to an album he intended to compose and
   sing during and after the mission, they might
   have made far more than the asked-for cash
   fee.

I can almost hear some of the songs now, such unborn
classics (?) as "Ural Mountain High", "Thank Bog I'm
a Commie Boy", and "Leaving on a MiG Plane".
