Dear Chuck,

to try to escape from Stalin's Soviet Union has hellishly
difficult, even if you were physically fit, & very few succeeded, bar
during the turmoil at the start & end of WW2. Further, until Stalin died
in 1953, fleeing to the West would usually result in your family being
fired from their jobs, evicted from their flats, and banished to some
small country town in Siberia.

yours, Keith

when they should have fled to the US,
>they stayed behind and supported a grotesque government in its long
term
>effort to enslave free men. Men such as Korolev, Andrei Tupolev,
Mikoyan,
>Kapitsa, and hundreds more who not only knew of the Gulag, but
actually
>worked in it and still didn't try to escape.
