[FPSPACE] Sputnik-2 anniversary

I noticed in the description of the Spunik launch vehicle a mention of a 
reflector deployed in orbit to aid tracking.  I've seen this mentioned 
before, but never with any detail.  What was it like? Was it mainly for 
radar or optical tracking? Is there any illustration of it available?
