Strange story. Differs in many significant details from the text from
Lantratov himself at
http://www.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5342&start=85 and
from the Kommersant article.
For friends who'd never been to Russia -- a short note of explanation.
Ivan's house was a 'khrushchoba' -- a five-storey building without a lift,
only a staircase with little landings at each storey and between, maybe
4x8 feet (1.2x2.4 m), with low-sitting windows at half-levels. No corners,
no places to hide, and four apartment doors at each storey. Anybody walking
from/to the 4th or 5th story (they are numbered 1 through 5) would see
an outsider, and any loud sound is heared in all five storeys even behind
closed doors.
Ceilings are very low, just 8 feet (2.4 m) or maybe 8 feet 4 inches (2.5 m).
It's only 30 feet from the window in question to the little roof above the
entry --
not enough to be killed for sure. Really bad place for covert murder or
suicide.
According to RIA Novosti and ITAR-TASS, the procurator's office started
criminal case on Article 110 of Criminal Code -- compulsion to suicide.
