[FPSPACE] information to share

I saw this on the Flagstaff newspaper website (www.azdailysun.com)

" Martha's friends have established an account at Bank of America to
receive contributions in support of the Portree family. Individuals
wishing to contribute to this account can go to any branch of Bank of
America and ask to deposit funds into the "Martha Portree's Family Fund"
account. The account will be open no longer than a month, with the
proceeds then delivered to her surviving husband and daughter to help
with what must be a growing stack of unanticipated expenses. "

I am going to try to make it to Flagstaff for the service Saturday and
will convey the thoughts expressed by the list members.

Folks,

We have some very sad news to pass along to the list membership. As you
can read from the correspondences below, the wife of list member and
frequent contributor David Portree died in a tragic automobile accident
this past Saturday. David was not in the car at the time, but their
daughter Samantha was. His wife Martha was a member of the staff at the
Cline Library at Northern Arizona University and a memorial service will
be held there for her this coming Saturday. There is contact
information below for those of you who would want to send a card or
flowers. Their four year old daughter, Samantha, was in the accident as
well but survived and is in the ICU there in Flagstaff. David has
remained by her side and is quite optimistic about her recovery which is
encouraging. Lets keep them all in our thoughts and prayers at this
very sad time and hope for a full recovery for Samantha.

A memorial ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 14
in the NAU Cline Library Auditorium. All are welcome.

JimO notes: I talked with Gary Gustafson at Martha's office at the Cline

Library.
He will have medical updates -- his phone is 928-523-5389. Despite being

really
"bunged up" on her head, Samantha had a brain scan that seemed to
indicate
no internal damage. David is optimisitc. She remains in the ICU.

JC emailed: I just spoke with Nancy Pitts of the Cline Library, and she
said that
flowers will be welcome at the memorial service. They can be
delivered Friday after 10:30 am or anytime Saturday before 2 pm.

The florists will need to know the detailed address:

Dear All,

I spoke with David this evening. He sounds a bit better,
all things considered.

He said that Sam is feeling better. Though still in pain,
Sam is more responsive to stimuli than she was earlier,
which is good.

Various folks from the area have been coming by to
lend support. Sam's pre-school teacher brought get-
well messages from her classmates, for example.

David is spending most of the time at the hospital,
sleeping in Sam's room (there's a chair that folds out
into sleep-mode). He is deeply grateful for all the
phone- and e-mailed messages of support that have
been sent.

A memorial service for Martha is scheduled for
this coming Saturday.

I have a card to send if any of the local folks would care to add a
note. I can walk it to you if interested.

Or send me a note or sentiment and I will literally cut and paste it
into the card

    Jim and John,

Thank you for passing this on. This is truly terrible news. I
first met David back at the FPSpace 1996 workshop in Korolev. I
remember him remarking in one or more postings about his wife's work
and the delight of his daughter. I think that is a picture of him
    and his daughter at http://members.aol.com/dsfportree/grandfalls.jpg
As a parent and now a grandparent with grandchildren that age,
this strikes home as your worst nightmare.

I checked the Daily Sun to see if there were any more details, but
they did not have anything yet. In the meantime, I will pass this
along to some list members who know David well and would want to
    know about this.

    Dave
