When Zenit-2 failed on the cosmodrome I seem to remember it was some
kind of fuel or grease coating contaminant in the oxygen rich manifold
from the manufacturing process that cause it to fail. Those manifolds
from the RD-171 engine must be absolutely clean as they head to the top
of the main thrust chambers. Foreign particles will literally explode
into flames and blow the guts out of the turbo-machinery melting huge
castings like hot butter.
Just wondering?
It looked to me as if the first stage dropped down through the flame
hole crashing into the flame deflector exploding under the platform
while the second and third stage exploded at deck level.
Quite a mess to say the least
