The very next day - February 13, 2007, the Wall Street Journal stated 
on its front page:

"When the first suborbital craft SpaceShip One lifted off from the 
Mojave Desert in June 2004, it ignited lofty dreams of space travel 
for tourists". Although the rest of the story focuses on the 
Rutan/Benson feud, the point of the story is that the X Prize indeed 
jump started this industry.

Thanks to Rich Godwin for bringing this story to my attention, the 
timing was impeccable.
