In terms of politics, there's no reason to go to the moon. Another way of
looking at it - in terms of politics, Venus would be as good. Or an asteroid. Or
Mongo.
You can have dozens of scientific reasons, commercial reasons, spiritual
reasons, whatever, but if there's no political reason commensurate with the cost
of the venture, it's not going to happen.
Besides, Bush isn't funding it - does that sound as though he gives a drat
about it?
We need to have alternatives ready. I like this "Return to the moon with the
Russians" idea. We could give them a tour of the Apollo 11 site.

"It's like when you're a kid, the first time they tell you that the world's
turning and you just can't quite believe it because everything looks like it's
standing still. I can feel it - the turn of the Earth. The ground beneath our
feet is spinning at a thousand miles an hour, the entire planet is hurtling
around the Sun at sixty-seven thousand miles an hour, and I can feel it. We're
falling through space, you and me. Clinging to the skin of this tiny little
world, and if we let go..." - The Ninth Doctor
