Brian:

Sure, China is different, but not so much on the Tibet issue - the U.S. has
occupied lots of nations (Navajo, for example) and sought to USify them (after
first seeking to exterminate them). Them what lives in glass houses shouldn't
toss rocks.

But getting back to space - I don't think that the Chinese are stupid. They
will work out that some of the justifications for lunar activities they've
gotten from their engineers are nonsensical, just as Americans and Russians and
Europeans have done. They'll probably do their lunar stunt, show the world
they're as good as the US was in 1969, and retreat to LEO, just as we did.
Geopolitical/cultural purpose served, then on to some other project.

"It's like when you're a kid, the first time they tell you that the world's
turning and you just can't quite believe it because everything looks like it's
standing still. I can feel it - the turn of the Earth. The ground beneath our
feet is spinning at a thousand miles an hour, the entire planet is hurtling
around the Sun at sixty-seven thousand miles an hour, and I can feel it. We're
falling through space, you and me. Clinging to the skin of this tiny little
world, and if we let go..." - The Ninth Doctor
