able to destroy all key U.S. low-orbit satellites by 2010

A U.S. intelligence assessment of China's anti-satellite weapons capability
says that China will have enough direct-ascent weapons by 2010 to destroy
all key low-Earth orbit satellites. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) disclosed the
assessment during a recent Senate hearing. The disclosure highlights the
strategic threat posed by the Chinese ASAT weapons since low-Earth orbit,
about 200 to 500 miles in space, is where key electro-optic and signals
intelligence-gathering satellites are located. The U.S. has about 40 to 50
strategic satellites in varying orbits.
