Official names of all those Soviet Moon probes were of course "Luna", cf. eg. "Uspekhi SSSR v issledovanii kosmicheskogo prostranstva: Pervoe kosmicheskoe desyatiletie 1957-1967" (Successes of USSR in outer space research : The first cosmic decade 1957-1967), Akademiya Nauk SSSR, Inst. istorii yestestvoznaniya i tekhniki. Moskva : Izd. Nauka, 1968. pp. 250--268.

< David S. F. Portree's well-written article on Gagarin et al had me
< wondering:
<
< Did the Soviets really ever call the Luna probes Luniks, or was that a
< Western convention based on Sputnik? I know as a derisive joke they
< called Sputnik 2 Muttnik, thus my wondering.
<
< Thanks,
<
