[FPSPACE] Can the Space Shuttle fly automated like Buran? No.

hi, when I asked this question, I think in 2003 or 2004, the fpspace
experts summarized that the shuttle cannot be ordered by radio to lower
its undercarriage. Everything else apparently could be done in automated
mode. 

   I am sure that it ould not take NASA long to provide an automated
option for the one remaining bottleneck.

I suppose it is pointless to ask if NASA would/could use it in that mode
and 
save a few astronauts' lives until something better/new/safer comes
along?
