Prolonging the mission would have pushed the landing earlier, making it even
longer before dawn.
For safety - lighting conditions on-orbit prior to, and at the point of,
retro-fire are more important. If the crew has sight of the horizon at
critical moments, they have a chance to navigate and orient the spacecraft
visually should it be necessary.
