Dave,

I am certain that one cause of posting problems is the "x-rich" text
formatting tag inserted in the header of every digest. This tag, which is
contained with left- and right-angle brackets like other HTML tags, is
invisible to most email clients, but it's there nonetheless. It takes some
work to find it and delete it. But once I do that, any replies which I post
go out as normal ASCII text with no problems. If I don't delete that tag
from the original digest, then my replies have problems like showing up in
the archive as blank messages. It's not definitive proof, since I was
unable to replicate this failure mode deliberately. But the correlation is
good enough for me -- "x-rich" tags are a problem.

It seems I'm already considered kind of a radical for pushing for a total
ban on attachments, so I suppose I won't get any support for agitating for
straight ASCII text.
