In Cape Town, we were very lucky that our winter rain clouds parted enough for all to see. All the telescopes at the Observatory were opened to the public. Those amateurs who can afford digital cameras, & laptops, were cheerfully downloading images from their own private telescopes scattered across the Observatory's lawns.
Some people could see the black dot of Venus on the sun's disk with just the dark ecclipse glasses. Even with prescription specs, my eyes could not see it at all, so I just went from telescope to telescope admiring the view.
And we were allowed to park on the lawns. Our Observatory only allows that during every Venus transit.
